The Kamada Ekadashi is observed during the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of the month of Chaitra. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Krishna, lovingly described glories of this Ekadashi to Yudhishthira Maharaja. This sacred day is celebrated as one of the most powerful among the twenty-four Ekadashis, capable of destroying all the sinful reactions and fulfilling the deepest desires of a sincere devotee.
The Story Behind Kamada Ekadashi
In the city of Ratnapura, a Gandharva named Lalit once made a mistake while singing in the royal court, as he became distracted thinking of his wife, Lalita. Angered by this, King Pundarika cursed him to become a fearsome demon.
Lalita, being a devoted wife, did not abandon him. She followed him through great difficulties and, by good fortune, met sage Shringi, who advised her to observe Kamada Ekadashi with sincerity and offer the merit for her husband’s deliverance.
With full faith, Lalita observed the fast, and by its divine power, Lalit was freed from the curse and regained his original form. Freed from suffering, the couple once again attained happiness. In this way, Kamada Ekadashi is glorified for its ability to remove sins and relieve one from suffering.
